Onions gets bowling award
England new boy Graham Onions and captain Dale Benkenstein were the main beneficiaries at Durham’s awards evening which took place at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel on Monday night.
Onions was the first Durham bowler to pick up 50 wickets in the season and was justly rewarded with the County Durham Development Company Young Player of the Year and Bowler of the Year, sponsored by The Journal.
Benkenstein had another useful season with the north-east club, scoring over 1,000 runs and was awarded the Arnott Commercial Batsman of the Year and the Players Player of the Year, sponsored by The Northern Echo.
Gareth Breese fought off stiff competition to be given the Fielder of the Year accolade after taking 24 catches, mainly in the slips.
Speaking about the winners, Head Coach Martyn Moxon said: “Dale is a worthy winner of the awards. He has been an inspiration all season to the whole playing staff.
"Every time he takes to the field for Durham he sets an example for all the players, both in his actions on the pitch and with his leadership qualities.”
“Graham has had a wonderful season, developing from being a talented youngster into a proven wicket taker. His England call up at the end of the season was no more than he deserves for his hard work.
“Gareth has been extremely reliable at first slip for us this season, taking a number of outstanding catches.”
