James Ormond has earned a new one-year deal with Surrey after proving his fitness on a non-contract basis.
The seamer, who played two Tests for England in 2001, has struggled with injuries since arriving at the Brit Oval in 2002.
He agreed with the Surrey management at the end of last season that he would train with the county over the winter with a view to earning an extension based on his condition.
Having come through Surrey’s first two LV County Championship matches, taking four wickets and bowling 56 overs, he has been awarded a 12-month extension.
Ormond said: “I am obviously really pleased to get a contract after putting in a lot of hard work during the winter.
“I’d also like to thank our backroom staff for their efforts in getting me fit and ready for another season.”
Captain Mark Butcher added: “I am very pleased that Jimmy has worked so hard to turn his career around.
“He is looking like the bowler he was three years ago before his injury problems, which is great news for the club.”
