Compton and Root clean up
Nick Compton and Joe Root’s great week got better when the duo, called up England on Tuesday, were respectively named NatWest Professional Cricketers' Association player of the year and young player of the year at Battersea Evolution tonight.
Compton and Root, who also this week became the Cricket Writers' Club County Championship cricketer of the year and young cricketer of the year respectively, are part of the Test squad to tour India later this year.
Grandson of England legend Denis, Compton enjoyed a magnificent season with the bat for Somerset, scoring 1,494 first-class runs at an average just shy of 100 and was denied the opportunity to become the first player in 25 years to score 1,000 first-class runs by the end of May by rain. The 29-year-old finished with five hundreds and seven half-centuries.

Somerset batsman Nick Compton, who scored 1,494 first-class runs this season, receives the Reg Hayter Cup from David Gower
Yorkshire's opening batsman Root continued the impressive start to his career by scoring more than 1,400 runs in all domestic cricket in only his second full season as a professional.
A career-best 222 not out against Hampshire was the highlight of his summer as he helped the White Rose to promotion in the LV= County Championship.
Senior manager for NatWest sponsorship & hospitality Chris Long said: "On behalf of NatWest I would like to congratulate all of tonight's winners. Our support for cricket continues across all levels of the game, from grassroots to international.
"The NatWest PCA Awards play a key role in raising almost half of the money generated for the PCA Benevolent Fund, which helps support current and former players and their families, while our NatWest Cricket Club continues to reward our customers, fans and local clubs."
