Rose Bowl hosts VIP visit
A group of Hampshire schoolchildren were treated to a special VIP tour of the Rose Bowl after winning a competition to design a new cricket shirt for Shane Warne's Hampshire team.
The children from Norwood Junior School in Eastleigh were judged winners by staff in the Rose Bowl's ticket office from an original 100 entries.
In the last week of summer term in July, Hampshire's PR manager Jason Hill, team mascot Harry the Hawk and Lesley Powell, a PR Ambassador from Sainsbury’s in Hedge End, visited the school to attend morning assembly and launch a special competition.
The creative approach of the young designers was very refreshing and the standard of the designs was extremely high, judges commented. Three winners and two runners up, all aged between five and 10 were selected from each year.
The winning designs were placed on display in the Atrium in the main Pavilion and the winners were invited to attend The Rose Bowl to experience a match day at the ground. Hampshire Community Cricket Coach Chris Wheeler, organised an introduction to cricket session on the Nursery Ground then the children enjoyed lunch in the Hambledon Suite overlooking the pitch where Hampshire were playing Kent.
Lesley Powell from Sainsbury’s presented Deputy Head teacher Marcus Roe and class teacher Sue Curtis with sporting equipment for the children to use during their lunch times.
“It is vitally important to keep kids active throughout the year and not just when Sainsbury’s launch their Active Kids for School campaign," said Lesley Powell.
"The equipment will go to help maintain their exercise and a healthier lifestyle.”
Marcus Roe added:“The generous donation of more sports equipment from Sainsbury’s has helped our younger children to enjoy a fully active lunch hour – this all goes towards a minimum expectation of two hours of physical activity a week.”
“Our children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to The Rose Bowl which gave them an inspirational insight into Hampshire cricket.”
