Former England wicketkeeper Jack Russell is to rejoin Gloucestershire as ‘team strategist’.
Russell, 44, takes responsibility for off-field guidance in all playing matters as team mentor, a new role designed to support captain Jon Lewis during the season.
Since ending a 24-season career four years ago, Russell - capped 54 times at Test level by England and an integral member of the Gloucestershire side which won seven one-day titles between 1999 and 2004 - has been seconded to mentor England’s wicketkeepers, and occasionally coached at Nevil Road.
“It is an honour to be asked and it is great to be back,” said Russell. “I am looking forward to the challenge tremendously.”
Gloucestershire captain Jon Lewis added: “I have always enjoyed a fantastic working relationship with Jack, and he has been inspirational to me and the team in the past.
“I know he will throw himself into this role 100 per cent, and it can only be a good thing to have him back within the dressing room.”
