Surrey take Second XI crown

Loan signing Tom Smith shone with bat and ball as Surrey won the Second XI Championship at Lancashire's expense.

The final at Old Trafford was drawn, but the visitors lifted the trophy by virtue of a higher first-innings total, with neither side batting twice in the three-day encounter.

Surrey’s 500 for eight declared was built around 135 from all-rounder Chris Jordan, whose seventh-wicket stand of 170 with Smith ultimately proved decisive.

Smith finished unbeaten on 88, 19-year-old Seren Waters and captain and regular first-team wicketkeeper Jon Batty having made 53 and 70 respectively.

Steven Croft, Simon Kerrigan and Steven Mullaney claimed two wickets apiece for Lancashire, whose reply was undermined by Smith’s left-arm spin.

The 22-year-old, who is nearing the end of a month-long loan spell from Sussex, claimed 5-90 from 34 overs as Lancashire slipped from 414 for five to 438 all out.

Karl Brown hit 83 at the top of the order, and there were sizeable contributions from Gareth Cross (65), Mullaney (77), captain Adrian Shankar (79) and Chris Tipper (45), but Smith claimed four of the last five wickets to fall to give Surrey a first-innings advantage and, ultimately, victory.
