Darren Maddy's first-innings century helped build a platform for Warwickshire to beat Glamorgan in the Second XI Championship final

Warwickshire made amends for losing in last year’s Second XI Championship final as Darren Maddy inspired them to a six-wicket triumph over Glamorgan at Coventry.

Veteran Maddy struck a resplendent century in the first innings before taking two wickets to hasten the end of Glamorgan’s second knock.

Chasing 149 for victory, Warwickshire wobbled from 70 without loss to 110 for four but wicketkeeper Richard Johnson made sure they would not finish runners-up in successive years with an unbeaten 44.

Warwickshire suffered a 70-run defeat to Surrey 12 months ago but they made a good start at the Bull’s Head Ground after winning the toss as Glamorgan were restricted to 215.

The Welsh side were indebted to captain David Brown’s 70, although he was denied the chance to make an impressionable score after being ran out by Recordo Gordon.

Tim Allin was the pick of the Warwickshire bowlers with 3-27, while Neil Carter and Steffan Piolet claimed two wickets apiece before Maddy took centre stage.

The 37-year-old’s 114 allied with 52 from skipper Ateeq Javid’s 52 put Warwickshire firmly in the driving seat after they were all out for 384.

Carter took three top-order wickets, with Maddy contributing 2-4 from seven balls and, despite fifties from Michael O’Shea and Chris Cooke, Glamorgan failed to set a defendable total - being dismissed for 317.

Warwickshire looked like they would set an emphatic triumph after openers Jonathon Webb and Laurie Evans took them to 70 without loss but Alex Jones and O’Shea shared four wickets to induce a mini-collapse.

However, Johnson eased the nerves with an assured 44 not out, while Freddie Coleman contributed an unbeaten 17 to wrap up victory.
