Huntingdoneshire Seventeen 6s

The Seventeen Sixes competition launched last year was back once again at Stanground College, the Sports College of Peterborough, as the event got underway for 2005 on June 15.

This new form of cricket has proved its popularity, with 18 teams having entered the U17 competition. The tournament has been made more attractive by the fact that the players are wearing coloured shirts in the colours of their cricket club.

The competition is again sponsored by Boots Opticians of Stamford. Indeed, the success of the tournament has seen the sponsors extend their sponsorship until 2007.

ECB.co.uk spoke to David Holmes from Huntingdonshire Cricket Board, who explained the origins of the event: "I had the idea of six-a-side cricket for under 17 year-olds. We play three games of 50 minutes with a five-minute break after each game."

The idea was hatched after a shortage of under 17s wanted to play the standard men’s game. Holmes added: "The introduction of the coloured kit, which local optician Boots agreed to pay for in a sponsorship deal, as well as the trophies awarded to the winners, made the game more attractive to youngsters."

Holmes was also keen to stress the importance of giving young people the chance to play any form of cricket: "The motto of the Huntingdonshire Cricket Board has always been ‘We must give people opportunities’."

Fourteen teams took part in last year’s competition, compared with 18 in this year’s tournament. This has meant that the games have had to be split between two venues, with nine teams playing from the Huntingdonshire area and nine from the Peterborough area.

The winners and runners-up from each area’s tournament will meet in Barnack on July 8 in a tournament decider.

This relatively new style of cricket is fast, fun and enjoyed by both players and spectators. There are three matches each evening, with each one commencing at 6pm.
