Surrey have announced that their new nickname for the 2006 limited-overs season will be the Brown Caps.

This replaces the Surrey Lions tag that has been used since 1997. This idea was proposed by the club and endorsed by the members.

Club captain Mark Butcher said: "Putting on the brown cap for the first time was one of the proudest moments of my life, so it is great to have our traditional nickname become our official limited-overs name.

“It's important for players and fans alike to be aware of the great history of the club and the Brown Caps name goes some way to achieving this."

Club legend Alec Stewart added: "The history and the future of the club is something that's very important to me.

“I think the re-naming of the limited overs side will give a better identity for the players and demonstrate to all those who represent Surrey, from grassroots through to the top level, what it means to wear the brown cap."
