Sussex have announced the appointment of Mark Davis as club coach with immediate effect, prompting his retirement from the playing side of the game.

The South African-born off-spinner, who turns 34 next week, made four Frizzell County Championship appearances for Sussex in 2005 and ends his career with 232 wickets in first class cricket.

He was part of the side which won the title in 2003 but he is now relishing the chance to concentrate on coaching.

“I'm thrilled to be able to continue with Sussex CCC in this new position and I'm really looking forward to the new challenges it will bring,” he said.

“Coaching is something I'm very used to and I feel it is a natural progression in my career. I'm very excited to be a part of the club in this new coaching era and the 2006 season can't come soon enough."

He takes over from Peter Moores, who left the club at the end of the season to take up his new role as ECB National Academy director at Loughborough University.

It continues Sussex’s successful policy of promoting from within. Moores was wicket-keeper/batsman for the county before becoming coach.

Mark Robinson, Professional Cricket Manager at Sussex, commented: "This is a fantastic opportunity for Mark and a great coup for the club.

“He has all the qualities to make an outstanding coach; strength, honesty, integrity and an ability to communicate at all levels.

“His experience both within the professional game as a player and most recently by running his own coaching academy in South Africa will make him a vital member of the coaching team."
