Sussex have offered contract extensions to Carl Hopkinson and Chris Nash, taking them both to the end of the 2008 season.

Hopkinson joined the professional staff in 2002, graduating from the Sussex Academy, and cricket manager Mark Robinson commented: “This extension is for all the hard work Carl has done in winning a place as an opening batter in a double-trophy winning team.

“We cannot understate Carl's contribution in this fantastic year. In the first half of the summer he glued together our upper order in four-day batting and played some match-winning roles in the one-day season.”

Hopkinson confirmed his commitment to Sussex, saying: “I'm looking forward to opening the batting again next year and I see it as a good challenge and a chance to develop my game. I'm pleased to be with the club for the next two years, to be a part of the move forward and more success.”

Nash is another Academy graduate and became a professional in 2005 and Robinson added: “It is a great compliment to Chris that when key 1st XI players were missing he was a more than able replacement, ensuring that player's absence was not felt.

“In two pressure games, Chris gave a calmness to the team in the same manner that Michael (Yardy) does. He has genuine leadership qualities and an aptitude to use any feedback or criticism as a positive to make himself a better player. He is an exciting prospect and is now ready to make a major contribution in the next season.”

Nash is also pleased to have secured the extension, saying: “I am very proud to be considered part of the leading county's future plans. Having had a taste of first-class cricket this year I am even more determined and committed to becoming a major part of a successful Sussex team for many years to come.”
