Paul Collingwood blasted out Derbyshire with five wickets

England one-day captain Paul Collingwood tuned up for Friday’s Twenty20 international against New Zealand by taking 5-14 to help Durham clinch a five-wicket win over Derbyshire at Chester-le-Street.

But the all-rounder was upstaged by Nayan Doshi, who took a hat-trick in near darkness when Durham had got their revised target in the Twenty20 Cup match down to seven from two overs.

Will Smith drove a return catch, Albie Morkel skied to midwicket and Phil Mustard hit a reverse sweep to square-leg.

With six needed off the last over, Jon Clare helped Durham with a no-ball and Shaun Pollock clinched victory with one ball to spare by turning the seamer behind square for three.

Rain forced Durham to begin their reply to 114 for nine in fading light at 8.45pm with a target of 48 from seven overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

After Michael Di Venuto was run out off the second ball of the innings Collingwood hit the first ball he faced for four. But he was lbw to Graham Wagg for seven and with only 14 on the board after three overs Durham looked doomed.

They took 17 off the next over, however, with Phil Mustard and Will Smith hitting four fours off Wagg, and with the help of an inside edge for four by Smith off Charl Langeveldt the target came down to seven off two overs.

Collingwood owed his wickets largely to Derbyshire’s desperation as their innings faded badly after choosing to bat.

Despite the economy of Shaun Pollock, who began the match with a maiden and finished with 1-11 in four overs, the visitors were 47 without loss after six overs.

They lost their way once Liam Plunkett capped an impressive return to action after his side injury by holding a stinging return catch to get rid of Greg Smith.

The South African had scored 47 off 28 balls with seven fours, but West Indian Wavell Hinds was the only other batsman to hit more than one boundary.

He had four fours in his 23 before he became Collingwood’s first victim when he sliced to short third man.

Fresh from his rapid century in the LV County Championship at Chesterfield, Jamie Pipe skied the second ball he faced to Mustard to give Pollock his single wicket.

Collingwood’s last three wickets came after the innings was interrupted for 20 minutes on 108 for five after 17.1 overs.

When Durham batted, only four came off Langeveldt’s opening over, and that included a no-ball for what was virtually a beamer.

It was just as well it was a white ball, otherwise Mustard might not have seen it.
