Medium-pacer Ryan Watkins returned figures of 5-16 - the best by a Glamorgan bowler in Twenty20 Cup cricket – as Gloucestershire slipped to a second successive defeat in the competition.

Chasing 167 to win at the SWALEC Stadium, Gloucestershire were bowled out for a meagre 127 in 19 overs.

The visitors had made an encouraging start by reaching 38 without loss but were then reduced to 54 for six.

The damage was done by Watkins in the sixth over when he dismissed Alex Gidman, Craig Spearman and Chris Taylor in the space of four balls.

Another medium-pacer, Mark Cosgrove, also chipped in with 2-11 from four overs.

From 72 for nine, last-wicket pair Jon Lewis and Steve Kirby gave some respectability to the score by putting on 55.

The 39-run victory made up for Glamorgan’s opening one-run defeat against Somerset on Monday, a game they felt they should have won easily.

Though Glamorgan posted a competitive score, their innings fell away dramatically after openers Jamie Dalrymple and Cosgrove had put on an impressive 86 inside nine overs.

Dalrymple led the way with seven fours in his 43 from 30 balls before he holed out to long-off.

Taylor was the successful bowler, although he was also dispatched for two big sixes in an over by Cosgrove.

After Cosgrove, who made 52 from 39 balls with three fours and three sixes, drove to extra cover, the innings stuttered and then subsided.

Tom Maynard was run out for a duck from a direct hit by Will Porterfield in the same over and Michael Powell was caught at short extra-cover three overs later.

Ben Wright survived a dreadful drop by Gidman on five to guide Glamorgan to a competitive total despite losing Mark Wallace and Watkins in the final three overs.

Kirby was forced out of the attack at the death by umpire Vanburn Holder after bowling two beamers, which meant Gemaal Hussain had to bowl the final five balls of the innings.
