Somerset edge low-scoring clash

Somerset recorded their lowest Twenty20 Cup total but still emerged as victors by one run in a dramatic finish against Glamorgan at Cardiff.

The visitors could only make 113 for six from 20 overs after winning the toss, despite Zander de Bruyn’s impressive 70 not out from 63 balls.

Though Glamorgan were reduced to 31 for four they were indebted to fifth wicket pair Ben Wright and Mark Wallace who put on 63 in eight overs and looked certain to guide their side to victory.

But from 94 for four Glamorgan lost five wickets for the addition of just nine runs as they were reduced to 103 for nine.

It came down to number 11 Garnett Kruger needing three to win off the final ball and he could only manage a single.

Somerset’s dreadful start to their innings was caused by new ball bowlers David Harrison and Kruger.

Harrison struck twice in two balls in the opening over to remove Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth.

In the second over Kruger got in the action as Craig Kieswetter holed out to mid-on where Mark Cosgrove took a good diving catch.

De Bruyn and Justin Langer did their best to try to rebuild the innings but Langer, having scored just seven from his first 20 balls, was the lbw victim of Robert Croft after hitting across the line.

On a turning pitch Croft and Dean Cosker kept up the pressure as the Somerset 50 came up in the 11th over, and there were only three boundaries scored in the opening 12 overs.

And on a turning wicket the third spinner, Jamie Dalrymple, reduced Somerset from 63 for four to 67 for six dismissing Peter Trego, thanks to a diving catch by Cosgrove at cover, and Arul Suppiah.

Glamorgan did not make a convincing start to their innings either.

Cosgrove was caught behind in the second over off Ben Phillips and Dalrymple was run out at the non-striker’s end after Alfonso Thomas dropped a catch off his own bowling.

The hosts slipped from 27 for two to 31 for four as Tom Maynard and Michael Powell both fell in the space of two overs before Wright and Wallace turned the tide back towards Glamorgan.

But at 94 for four Wallace was caught on the boundary, which heralded a dramatic collapse as Ryan Watkins, Robert Croft, Dean Cosker and Wright all were out in quick succession.

Young leg-spinner Max Waller was the pick of the Somerset attack, finishing with figures of 3-17 from four overs.

Phillips and Thomas also bowled their full allocation and finished with identical figures of 2-19.
