Yorkshire take all

Twenty20 Cup
Adil Rashid

Adil Rashid took four wickets with his leg-spin

A consummate all-round performance from Yorkshire ensured their progress to the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals as they thrashed Nottinghamshire by nine wickets.

England Lions all-rounder Adil Rashid starred with the ball, tearing through the hosts’ middle order with four wickets for 24 runs as the hosts were limited to 136 for eight.

Yorkshire openers Gerard Brophy (57 not out) and Andrew Gale (45) then combined for a county record first-wicket partnership of 99 before Anthony McGrath finished the game with 12 balls to spare.

Brophy’s innings equalled his career-best in the competition and contained six fours while Gale hit a six and three fours.

The Outlaws began their innings confidently after winning the toss but openers Matt Wood and Will Jefferson were both unable to make worthwhile contributions after early boundaries.

Adam Voges then received an unlikely reprieve on 12 when he was involved in a horrible mix-up with Samit Patel going for a second run, and appeared to have been run out by Rashid.

But third umpire Mike Harris adjudged that bowler Azeem Rafiq, making his debut at the age of 17, had knocked the bails off with his hand while trying to collect the ball.

Voges went on to 39 before he became Rashid’s third victim, as the highly-promising leg-spinner found plenty of turn in the used pitch.

First to go was Patel, pulling straight to deep midwicket, while Chris Cairns was lbw to a top-spinner and Voges and Mark Ealham were both well-beaten by leg-breaks to give wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy simple stumping chances.

Andre Adams spooned a Darren Gough slower ball to mid-off and although Chris Read offered some late resistance with three fours off the last over before being run out for 31, the Outlaws total looked well below par.

That quickly proved to be the case with Brophy and Gale settling in before unfurling their full range of strokes.

Gale survived one half-chance on seven when his booming drive was dropped by a diving Patel at cover before the left-hander tamely hit Rob Ferley to midwicket.

McGrath produced an entertaining cameo with 30 off 15 balls and finished things off in style with a four over cover.

Lancashire’s washout at Durham ensured they finished above Yorkshire in second place in the North Division, with the Tykes qualifying as one of the two best third-place sides.
