Jonathan Trott reached a personal milestone as Warwickshire moved closer to the Twenty20 Cup quarter-finals with a four-wicket victory over Glamorgan at Edgbaston.
The opener’s quickfire 33 from 17 deliveries saw him become one of the top 10 scorers in the shortest format of the game with 1,437 runs – including 345 from eight innings in this season’s tournament.
Glamorgan’s 148 for seven – built around Jamie Dalrymple’s 63 from 42 balls – was nowhere near enough to test Warwickshire as they blasted 52 from four ragged overs by Garnett Kruger and David Harrison.
Trott’s opening partnership with pinch-hitter Neil Carter is among the most dangerous on the county circuit.
Carter smashed one six in making 12 from eight balls and Trott cleared the rope twice as well as collecting four fours.
Both went to catches at short midwicket but Jim Troughton (29 from 13 balls) kept the charge going with three sixes before he was bowled by Robert Croft.
When Alex Wharf, in his first over, removed Ian Bell with a catch at point, Warwickshire wisely settled for a more cautious approach and had just seven balls to spare when Rikki Clarke (24 not out) saw them home.
All their five victories in the Midlands/West/Wales group have come when chasing a target.
They again followed a successful formula by winning the toss and pegging Glamorgan back to a total under 150.
Something bigger seemed likely when Dalrymple improved on his innings of 50 in his side’s six-wicket defeat at Cardiff in the first Twenty20 Cup meeting of the season.
The former Middlesex all-rounder established momentum in successive overs with two fours off Carter and three off Clarke but Warwickshire retained some control with two exceptional catches to remove his first two partners.
Clarke stretched full length at mid-on to intercept Michael O’Shea’s drive off Keith Barker’s second ball and Steffan Piolet also struck in his first over when Bell twisted in mid-air at square leg to hold a reverse sweep from Mark Wallace.
Dalrymple hit nine fours and a six before he also fell to the reverse sweep, top-edging Jeetan Patel to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose, and from there Glamorgan lost their way despite an unbeaten 39 from Michael Powell.
