Trott runs hot

Warwickshire’s Jonathan Trott fell just 19 runs short of a double century to put pressure on Derbyshire with a mammoth performance in the LV County Championship match at Edgbaston.

The 27-year-old South African-born batsman batted for nearly seven and half hours to make 181 from 363 balls – his 14th first-class century – before the home side declared on 476 for nine.

Derbyshire, to their credit, responded positively in trimming their deficit to 393 by reaching 83 without loss in 22 overs.

Refusing to be overawed by a target of 327 to avoid the follow-on, Chris Rogers (51 not out) completed 1,000 runs for the season and Paul Borrington continued his impressive start in county cricket with an unbeaten 25.

Trott has so far appeared on the edge of England’s one-day radar with two Twenty20 internationals appearances in 2007, but he is now a more rounded player with the technique, desire and application to bat for a long time.

After taking 105 balls over his first 50, he faced a further 146 deliveries before posting his hundred.

The next phase was a shade quicker but over the full 447 minutes his innings contained no more than 18 boundaries.

Derbyshire only got a look-in on the second day when the new ball, taken at 220 for three, brought three wickets for eight runs in 27 balls.

Left handers Jim Troughton and Ant Botha fell to inswingers from Charl Langeveldt and Tim Ambrose clipped Graham Wagg to short midwicket where Dan Redfern reacted quickly to hold a sharp low chance.

Trott’s overnight partnership with Troughton (35) yielded a painstaking 94 from 38 overs but the lower order applied more forceful methods as Ian Salisbury and Chris Woakes shared consecutive stands of 110 and 103 with Trott.

Nayan Doshi conceded a straight six and two other boundaries off successive balls and was withdrawn from the firing line when Salisbury hit another six in his next over.

The former Surrey leg-spinner made 64 from 84 balls – his third half-century of the season – before top-edging Jonathan Clare to wicketkeeper Tom New.

With Trott steadfastly maintaining his focus, England Under-19 seamer Woakes again confirmed his ability with the bat.

Having timed his drives with the finesse of a higher-order player, he greeted Doshi’s reappearance with a sweet pick-up for six.

The left-armer secured some compensation with the last two wickets, Woakes caught at point for 45 - his highest championship score - and Trott’s top-edge to slip left him on 999 runs for the season.
