Essex have signed 22-year-old medium-fast seam bowler Chris Wright on a two-year deal from Middlesex.

Wright’s contract was due to expire at the end of this season and was given permission to talk to other counties last month.

He said: “The main thing that has struck me about Essex, as an opponent, is their attitude. They seem to have a young, highly-ambitious squad. The likes of Tim Phillips, Mark Pettini, Varun Chopra etc have all come through the ranks and been given good opportunity to establish themselves.

“That reflects in the way they play their cricket with everyone working well together on the field. I’m excited to be getting involved with them.

“Hopefully we can achieve some silverware but my first job is to force my way into the first team on a regular basis.”

Essex coach Paul Grayson is happy to have signed Wright

Wright made his first-team debut for Middlesex in 2004 and has so far played in 18 first-class matches, taking 23 wickets and scoring 444 runs, along with 23 one-day games.

Essex first team coach Paul Grayson added: “Chris has had a lack of opportunities at Middlesex but he is a young bowler who has impressed me when I’ve seen him play for Middlesex 2nd XI and Cambridge UCCE.

“He swings the ball out at medium-lively pace and we think we can help him progress his career here. As he also bats a bit down the order we think he will be a good addition to the squad.”

Chief Executive David East said: “Chris Wright is a young, relatively inexperienced player but one who has shown great promise. He’s looking for a new start so we hope this will be a good move for him.

“Chris went to (Anglia Ruskin) University with Tony Palladino and is also known to some of the other younger members of our squad. We believe he will be a valuable addition to the squad system we are following at Essex.

“I would think we will be looking for one, possibly two, more domestic players to come in to support our campaign to bolster both the bowling and batting.”
