Derbyshire Falcons and Lancashire Lightning were frustrated by the weather at the County Ground as their Yorkshire Bank 40 Group B match was abandoned with only three overs bowled.

Rain had delayed the start by five minutes but, although Derbyshire were able to begin their innings, another heavy shower sent the players back to the pavilion and the game was eventually called off at 4:30pm.

It was Derbyshire's first game in this season's competition but captain Wayne Madsen's bad luck with the coin continued when he lost the toss for the fifth time and was put in.

Lancashire were playing their second match following last weekend's defeat to Durham Dynamos but they would have relished the chance to bowl first in the overcast conditions.

Kyle Hogg's opening over contained three wides but the hosts had a let-off in the second when Chesney Hughes was dropped by Stephen Moore at short midwicket off Oliver Newby.

Hughes had scored two out of six runs at that stage, and he and Shivnarine Chanderpaul doubled that tally before the rain returned shortly after 2pm and, with no sign of any improvement, the umpires bowed to the inevitable two and half hours later.
