Gloucestershire Gladiators got off the mark in their Yorkshire Bank 40 Group C campaign by virtue of a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over the Unicorns at Wormsley.

Michael Klinger’s side suffered a heavy defeat in their opening encounter versus Leicestershire two days ago, yet got back on track today.

Having won the toss, the Unicorns could only post 153 for nine in 40 overs, Michael O'Shea top-scoring with 41 in a second successive poor batting effort; they managed just 183 for eight versus Somerset yesterday.

Hamish Marshall

Hamish Marshall whips to leg during a 67 that helped Gloucestershire Gladiators to a comfortable nine-wicket Yorkshire Bank 40 win today

While the Gladiators did not make as light work of such a target as their west-country rivals, who won with 147 deliveries to spare, they did overhaul the target in just 23.2 overs.

Klinger anchored the innings with 52 not out, while Hamish Marshall compiled a more fluent 67 and Chris Dent chipped in with an 11-delivery 29.

Will Gidman did the early damage for the visitors, ousting openers Tom Lancefield and Lewis Hill cheaply.

O’Shea attempted to hold the innings together amid Garry Park, Scott Elstone and Keith Parsons chipping in with handy contributions.

However, all of Gloucestershire’s bowlers impressed - particularly David Payne, who led the way with good figures of 3-29 - as the Unicorns had to settle for a less-than-stellar score.

The Gladiators made quick work of their reply as Marshall and Klinger showed flair at the top of the order, the former striking eight fours and two sixes in a 62-ball stay.

Klinger was more reserved but dropped anchor to great effect, paving the way for some late fireworks from Dent as he hit three fours and two sixes in a brief cameo.
