Derbyshire have moved their Yorkshire Bank 40 game with Essex on Sunday 9 June from the County Ground, Derby, to Highfield, Leek.

The match comes three years on from a thrilling contest between the two counties at Highfield where 547 runs were scored and Essex won by five wickets.

A Friends Life t20 fixture there between Derbyshire and Warwickshire followed in 2011 when a bumper crowd witnessed the home side emerge victorious by six wickets.

After a break in 2012, county cricket is to return to Leek this year when Derbyshire host Essex in the Yorkshire Bank 40 on June 9

No match at Leek was possible in the 2012 schedule but, with the support of Leek Cricket Club and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, county cricket is returning there.

Derbyshire chief executive Simon Storey said: "By taking this fixture to Leek we are making county cricket accessible to communities outside our usual catchment area.

"Leek will appeal to cricket fans from the Staffordshire Moorlands and Stoke-on-Trent as well as areas of Derbyshire, particularly Ashbourne, Buxton and the Peak District, all of whom I hope will come out in support of the match.

"Having played matches at Highfield before, we know facilities and infrastructure are in place to host a very successful match-day operation. It promises to be a great day for cricket supporters and their families."

Leek CC chairman Brian Mellor said: "It's a pleasure to host county cricket at Highfield and we're looking forward to the opportunity of doing so again this summer.

"It will be a real treat for our members and the local community to see Derbyshire's title-winners, plus new signing Shivnarine Chanderpaul, in action at our venue."
