Warwickshire Bears were left still seeking their first win of this season's Yorkshire Bank 40 after their Group A match against Sussex Sharks at Edgbaston was washed out without a ball being bowled.

The washout followed a one-run defeat against Kent Spitfires in their opening match last week but Warwickshire, beaten finalists last season, were probably the happier with the point from a no result.

Injuries and international calls had deprived them of 11 players and reduced them to a bare bones squad, which would have meant a competitive debut for pace bowler Recordo Gordon had play been possible.

England pair Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, who played in the drawn LV= County Championship match with Middlesex, were unavailable following their inclusion in the squad for this week's first Investec Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

Batsman Varun Chopra plus seamers Chris Wright and Chris Woakes were away playing for England Lions against New Zealand at Leicester and batsman Laurie Evans joined an already lengthy injury list when he had his left hand broken by a lifter from Middlesex's Steven Finn on Friday.

Evans is likely to be out of action for a month and has joined seamers Keith Barker (intercostal muscle) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby (broken arm), batsman Ian Westwood (ankle) plus slow left-armers Chris Metters (shoulder) and Paul Best (stress fracture of the back) on Warwickshire's long-term injury list.

The covers went on at Edgbaston an hour before the scheduled start and as the rain became heavier during the afternoon umpires Rob Bailey and Steve Gale took the decision to abandon the match after a pitch inspection at 4:45pm.

It is a second successive wasted visit to Edgbaston in this competition for Sussex who also suffered a washout in a scheduled day/night contest last July.
