Edgbaston suffered its seventh complete washout in 12 days of cricket when Warwickshire's televised day/night Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Sussex was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Ironically, the abandonment came in bright sunshine 10 minutes before the scheduled start at 4.40pm, but the damage had been done earlier in the day when heavy showers topped up the already high water levels.

A final deluge two hours before the start left the groundstaff with a losing battle to get the playing area fit for cricket.

When the covers were removed there were muddy areas on old pitches on the Rea Bank side of the square and standing water on the outfield on the Pershore Road side of the ground.

After several inspections umpires Trevor Jesty and Jeff Evans decided that there was no chance of the ground drying out, even to allow a reduced overs contest, and the match was called off.

The abandonment followed three lost days in the Investec Test between England and West Indies at Edgbaston last month and the washout of last week's NatWest Series one-day international against Australia.

There was further frustration for spectators and players alike at Edgbaston as yet another match fell victim to the inclement weather

Two of Warwickshire's five home matches in the Friends Life t20 were also washed out without a ball being bowled and two more were badly rain-affected.

Warwickshire will hope for an improvement in underfoot conditions overnight as they are due to resume their LV= County Championship campaign against Sussex at Edgbaston tomorrow.

The start time for the opening day of that match had already been put back to 12 noon because of the scheduled late finish of this match.
