England all-rounder Stuart Broad is in contention to become the first player in history to win the Young Cricketer of the Year award twice.
The 22-year-old Nottinghamshire player, who scooped the honour in 2006 while at Leicestershire, is on a seven-man shortlist to pick up the gong at the Cricket Writers’ Club annual dinner in London on Monday night.
He was also shortlisted in the Emerging Player category at the International Cricket Council awards in Dubai on Wednesday but lost out to Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis.
One-day international colleague Ravi Bopara joins 2006 winner Broad in the septet.
The other candidates are Kent and England Lions opener Joe Denly, Derbyshire’s Jon Clare, Liam Dawson of Hampshire, Worcestershire wicketkeeper Steven Davies and Warwickshire’s England Under-19 bowler Chris Woakes.
Winners of the prestigious award have to be England qualified and under the age of 23 on May 1 of the season in question. Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid took the award last year.
