ICC Champions Trophy

The ICC Champions Trophy will be contested in England and Wales in 2013 after the ECB was today confirmed as host

The England and Wales Cricket Board will host the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, it was announced today.

At their meeting in Singapore, the International Cricket Council confirmed the decision, which had been widely expected.

England last hosted the event in 2004, when they lost to West Indies in the final at the Brit Oval.

On that occasion, England were dismissed for 217 in the last of their 50 overs but reduced the Windies to 147 for eight and appeared to be coasting to victory, only for an unbroken stand of 71 between Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw in falling darkness to deny the host nation the spoils.

Two-time defending champions Australia beat New Zealand in last October's final at Centurion in South Africa, having first won the competition in 2006 in India.

India and hosts Sri Lanka shared the title in the 2002 tournament after the final was twice washed out by storms, New Zealand triumphed in Kenya two years previously and South Africa won the inaugural tournament in Bangladesh in 1998.

The ICC also announced the hosts for upcoming major tournaments with England’s defence of their World Twenty20 title to be made in Sri Lanka in two years’ time.

Bangladesh will then be the venue for the same event in 2014 - their first major international tournament as sole hosts.

The 2015 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

It will be the first time cricket’s showpiece event will be played in the Antipodes since the two nations shared hosting responsibilities in 1991, when Pakistan beat England in the final.
