Alastair Cook, who hit 766 runs in the rubber, and Andrew Strauss celebrate England's first Ashes series win in Australia for 24 years

England opening batsmen Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss are among the 10 nominees for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Cook and Strauss, the latter as captain, this year helped England win an Ashes series in Australia for the first time in 24 years and become the top-ranked Test team for the first time.

Cook amassed a stunning 766 runs in the Ashes rubber, including a ton in January’s finale at Sydney, and went from strength to strength in the summer Tests with hundreds against Sri Lanka at Cardiff and Lord's plus a career-best 294 versus India at Edgbaston.

Following the World Cup, in which he did not feature, Cook inherited the one-day captaincy from Strauss and led England to NatWest Series wins over Sri Lanka and India, making a century against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.

Having lifted the Ashes urn at the SCG in January, Strauss went on to hit a one-day international best 158 in the tied World Cup group game with India at Bangalore.

Although he did not make three figures in Tests this year, Strauss struck a career-best 241 not out versus Leicestershire at Lord’s in the LV= County Championship.

That came after he led England to Test series victories over Sri Lanka and India, the latter a 4-0 whitewash that saw the tourists usurped as the highest ranked side.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be selected by a public telephone vote during the live television show on Thursday 22 December from 8pm.

The other contenders are golf’s Darren Clarke, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy, athletics’ Mo Farah and Dai Greene, boxer Amir Khan, cyclist Mark Cavendish and tennis player Andy Murray.
