England Under-19s finally broke their duck on their tour of Bangladesh as they chalked up a heartening five-wicket victory in the fifth one-day international in Fatullah.

England’s youngsters, whose only victory had been in a warm-up game ahead of the seven-match series which they trailed 4-0, were indebted to pivotal contributions from opening left-arm seamer David Payne and opening batsman James Vince.

Payne snared 4-56 in restricting the hosts to 196 all out, while man-of-the-match Vince helped set up the victory with a solid 71 as England reached 197 for five.

Paul Best skippered the side as Azeem Rafiq took a rest from captaincy duties and England were asked to field first after losing the toss.

Payne made inroads early on in dismissing Saikat Ali as England’s bowlers kept a tight leash on the scoring rate.

Nural Hasan and Tasamul Haque both got starts, however the pair failed to go on having been watchful for long periods and both fell to Rafiq for 28 from 71 balls and 36 from 83 deliveries respectively.

Skipper Mahadmudul Hasan also looked circumspect in his approach and was run out having top-scored with 48 from 92 balls.

Best (1-25 from 10 overs) and Rafiq (3-36 from 10) were economical and only Nur Hossain’s late-order 39 from 26 balls helped the hosts occupy 49.5 overs.

In reply, England got off to a solid start as Chris Dent and Vince put on 40 before the former was run out for 19.

Joe Root also scored 19 before falling to Nur Hossain, but Vince was assured in making a solid-half century before Saikat bowled him.

Ateeq Javid chipped in with a helpful 34 not out and Michael Bates also passed 30 as England chalked up a morale-boosting win, reaching their target after 48.5 overs.

Coach Mick Newell said: “This was an improved all round performance with two good spells of spin bowling from Best and Rafiq with Vince leading the batting and Javid and Bates completing it with a good partnership, leading to a convincing victory.”
