Australia freshen up T20 squad
Cameron White has been named as captain of an experimental Australia Twenty20 squad to face Ashes victors England after Michael Clarke announced his retirement from the format.
England wrapped up a 3-1 Test series win this morning, and the sides will now begin a lengthy limited-overs schedule beginning with T20 fixtures on Wednesday and next Friday.
Following Clarke’s departure, only three members of the hosts’ 12-man squad were involved in the Ashes humbling: Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson and Steven Smith.
They are joined by a mixture of experience - in the form of White, David Hussey and Brett Lee - and relatively new faces such as Aaron Finch, James Pattinson and Stephen O’Keefe. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine, meanwhile, has been promoted to vice-captain.
Andrew Hilditch, the national selection panel chairman who named the party just a couple of hours after England sealed their third win of the series at the SCG, said: “As you all know, Michael Clarke has decided to retire from international Twenty20 cricket.
“Michael did an outstanding job as leader of our Twenty20 team and took us to the final of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.
“Cameron White has been named as captain of the Twenty20 team and Tim Paine vice-captain. We are confident that they will provide outstanding leadership for what is a very exciting Twenty20 team.
“The national selection panel is taking the opportunity to look at some of our exciting young talent in this form of the game.
“Aaron Finch has been in outstanding form for Victoria and the NSP looks forward to watching him play at the highest level in this form of the game.
“James Pattinson is one of a crop of young fast bowlers with great potential and he impressed with his stint with the Australian side in India. We’re sure he’s ready for the challenge of international cricket.
“The squad also sees the return of Brett Lee and Shaun Tait. Both at their best are explosive bowlers and should add greatly to the team.”
