Alastair Cook's 766 Ashes series runs have taken him all the way from 30th to fifth in the ICC Test batting rankings

Alastair Cook is up to fifth in the ICC Test batting rankings after his string of magnificent Ashes displays.

The left-handed opener scored a match-winning 189 in Sydney, helping him to climb eight places from 13th.

It continues an amazing rise for Cook - who was in 30th position in the rankings when England touched down on Australian soil, but has since scored 766 runs which earned him the man-of-the-series award.

England’s Ian Bell and Matt Prior have also improved their rankings after hitting centuries in the innings-and-83-runs victory in Sydney.

Bell has moved up five places to 22nd position, while Prior is now in 29th after gaining six places.

Jonathan Trott remains in fourth, while there is also good news for Andy Flower’s side in the latest bowling rankings.

James Anderson climbs one spot to third after taking 24 Ashes wickets, and Tim Bresnan is up five places to 36th.

India’s Sachin Tendulkar and South African Jacques Kallis share top spot in the batting ranking, while on the bowling front Dale Steyn continues to lead Graeme Swann.
