Trescothick: Perth Test is key
Former England batsman Marcus Trescothick believes the third Ashes Test in Perth has taken on even greater significance now that the tourists are ahead in the five-match series.
Andrew Strauss’ side are brimming with confidence following an emphatic innings-and-71-run victory in the second Test in Adelaide.
But Trescothick, who featured in 76 Tests and 123 one-day internationals for England, believes it is vital they hammer home their advantage when the series resumes at the WACA next week.
“I think the next Test is a big test of the character of both teams,” Trescothick told the ECB Cricket Podcast.
“If Australia are going to get back in the series, I would say they have to win this next Test, otherwise I think they will find it very hard work after that.
“At the same time, if England can come out of the game with another draw or win, then I think we can win the series quite convicingly, so it is going to be really important.
“There are three big games to go and it would be easy for us to sit back now and say ‘we’re playing really well’ and just take our foot off the pedal.
“We’ve almost got to drive it in a bit more, because if we can win the next Test, that would pretty much secure it for us.”
Trescothick has been in touch with England captain Strauss, who he enjoyed a productive opening partnership with between May 2004 and August 2006.
“The mood is very good,” added the Somerset left-hander. “I’ve had a little bit of contact with Andrew over the last few days and he seems very jovial about it all.
“Obviously there’s a little bit of time for them to relax now and catch up with a few people, but I’m sure they are working hard and trying to remain as positive as they can going into the next week.
“All aspects of their game are in order and they look very confident about the way they are going about playing their cricket.”
