Mohammad Ashraful's "confidence is suffering" according to Rafiqul Alam and he will not face England in the ODIs

Bangladesh have named a 13-man squad for one-day international series against England, with former captain Mohammad Ashraful a surprise omission.

Ashraful has long been considered one of his country’s most talented batsmen but has been rested from the series after some indifferent recent form.

Shakib Al Hasan captains the side, while the likes of Junaid Siddique, Naeem Islam and Aftab Ahmed have been selected after playing for the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in warm-up matches against England this week.

Explaining Ashraful’s absence chairman of selectors Rafiqul Alam said: “Ashraful himself wanted a break and we also felt that the pressure on him had increased to the extent that his confidence was suffering.

“We believe that a gap from international cricket would be beneficial for him and he will come back strongly soon and do justice to his calibre.”

Fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza returns after recuperating for nearly seven months following a knee surgery.

Alam added: “He has also been declared fit by his doctor. Someone like Mortaza has got nothing to prove regarding his ability and we have confidence in him. He is a big match player.”

The first match of the three-game ODI series takes place in Dhaka on Sunday.

Bangladesh squad: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim (wkt), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Sohrawordhi Shuvo.
