England lose their way

Samit Patel took two wickets to boost his claim to keep his place in the one-day line-up

England's build-up for the one-day series against India suffered a blow as they fell to a 124-run defeat in their final warm-up match, against Mumbai.

Just three days before the opener to the seven-match series in Rajkot, the tourists were dismissed for a lowly 98 in reply to Mumbai's 222 for seven.

Facing a team made up mostly of club professionals, England never recovered from losing their first five wickets inside the first 12 overs with seamer Khsemal Waingankar, who has played only one first-class match in his career, claiming five wickets.

The defeat comes as a setback following the 122-run win against Mumbai Cricket Association on Sunday and leaves the tourists facing an intensive few days of practise before they face India on Friday.

Having performed impressively on Sunday, England's batting was exposed with the new ball and they failed to recover from a poor start to their reply.

Warwickshire batsman Ian Bell had looked in good touch scoring 58 on Sunday but lasted just two overs of today's encounter.

Facing seamer Waingankar, Bell hung his bat outside off-stump almost in practise at a cut shot believing the wide delivery would pass harmlessly to the wicketkeeper but instead edged the ball behind.

Fellow opener Matt Prior was given lbw to seamer Rajesh Verma with a delivery which kept low in the following over.

Waingankar claimed his second victim in his next over, taking the key wicket of Pietersen, who advanced down the track trying to whip the ball through midwicket but was hit on the pad and the umpire upheld the appeal.

Samit Patel, promoted to number five to give him batting practise, was fortunate to survive another lbw appeal two balls later and attempted to rescue England from their plight by building a partnership with Paul Collingwood.

Steve Harmison

Steve Harmison had three appeals turned down during his opening spell of bowling

That partnership lasted only five overs, however, when Collingwood advanced down the wicket to Verma and drove straight to mid-on to leave England's innings in trouble.

Patel lasted a further three overs before also falling, this time edging Waingankar to second slip as England slipped towards defeat.

Andrew Flintoff lasted just one over before edging behind and Ravi Bopara fell in similar circumstances while Luke Wright gave Waingankar his fifth victim when he played on after pushing forward defensively.

Steve Harmison went cheaply before Graeme Swann (24 not out) and James Anderson (20) added 34 for the last wicket. Anderson went caught behind to give Rahil Shaikh his third victim.

Anderson had impressed in taking three wickets on Sunday, and captured another one early this morning when opener Paul Valthaty edged low to Swann at first slip.

Valthaty had already had one reprieve in the first over when he also edged Anderson behind - but wicketkeeper Prior failed to take the chance, diving low to his right.

Harmison was unfortunate not to claim another wicket in the next over when he had two appeals for a catch behind and an lbw shout denied against the other opener, Praful Waghele.

But having survived a testing early spell, Waghele grew in confidence and claimed his first boundary with a deft late cut off Harmison.

New batsman Sushant Marathe settled quickly and drove Anderson down the ground for his first boundary - and despite introducing Flintoff and Swann into the attack, England struggled to break the stand.

It lasted 24 overs until Waghele, attempting to increase the scoring rate, attempted one slog sweep too many and chipped Swann straight to Patel at midwicket.

Patel claimed another success in the next over, with a smart return catch to remove captain Onkar Khanvilkar as England began to make inroads into Mumbai's middle order.

Mumbai were lifted to a respectable total by 37 off 35 balls from Shoaib Shaikh, who hit two sixes off Patel and another off Collingwood.
