Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh, India's premier spin bowler for some time, has been overlooked for the start of the one-day series against England

India have left Harbhajan Singh out of their squad for the first two one-day internationals against England.

The experienced off-spinner struggled on the tour of the West Indies and also failed to impress in the opening two npower Tests against England before returning home early with an abdominal strain.

Harbhajan has since regained full fitness, but has been overlooked, with the selectors preferring Ravichandran Ashwin and uncapped Punjab leg-spinner Rahul Sharma.

India suffered a host of injuries during their time in England and Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel all remain on the sidelines. Gautam Gambhir, however, does return.

The squad for the remaining three games will be named at a later date to give some of those star names the chance to prove their fitness.

In addition to Rahul, Karnataka medium-pacer Sreenath Aravind has also been included in an India squad for the first time.

Varun Aaron, who did not play a match on the recent England tour, is retained, while Umesh Yadav, who has not been part of the international set-up since the 2010-11 Test series in South Africa, is another paceman to be given an opportunity.

The series kicks off in Hyderabad on October 14 with the second ODI in New Delhi on October 17. The other matches will be held in Mohali, Mumbai and Kolkata.

India squad for first two ODIs against England: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Parthiv Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, S Aravind, Rahul Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar.
