Guptill blow adds to New Zealand's test
New Zealand opener Martin Guptill is set to miss the forthcoming Test series against England due to a thumb injury.
Guptill defied a painful strained hamstring to help the Black Caps to victory in last weekend’s first one-day international in Hamilton having returned to bat after retiring hurt.
The hamstring problem will also prevent him from playing in Saturday’s ODI decider in Auckland, but it is ligament damage in his left thumb which will require surgery next week and subsequently result in a longer absence.
New Zealand physiotherapist Paul Close said: “We felt it was best to get Martin right for the tour to England in May and June, so the next couple of months were seen as the best window to have the surgery.”
