England are without the services of batsman Jos Buttler, right, for tomorrow's first ODI against Pakistan due to a hand injury

Jos Buttler will miss tomorrow’s first one-day international against Pakistan because of split webbing in his left hand.

Buttler suffered the injury in England Lions’ final match against Sri Lanka A last week, on the same day England picked him in their squad for four ODIs in the United Arab Emirates.

The middle-order batsman was unable to take part in Friday’s warm-up match between the Lions and England at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, and captain Alastair Cook confirmed today that he is also out of contention to face Pakistan at the same venue.

“Unfortunately, he’s not going to make it,” Cook said of the 21-year-old.

“It’s obviously quite a bad split of the webbing, so he’s unavailable for selection - obviously for this game, and then we’ll see how it heals for the next 24 to 48 hours.

“It’s a big cut in the webbing, and the risk of it doing it again is quite high so soon after when he first did it.”

The uncapped Buttler might otherwise have been on course to make his ODI debut here.

“We hadn’t got that far into selection when he did it, in the last game in Sri Lanka,” he added.

“So we knew from a while back it was going to be touch and go. He put in some outstanding performances for the Lions, and put his name right in the hat.”
