Onions added to England mix
National selector Geoff Miller has confirmed that Durham seamer Graham Onions will travel to the United Arab Emirates next month with England’s Test squad as bowling cover.
Onions, 29, was not named in England’s 16-man party for the three-Test series against Pakistan, and will not be an official member of the squad.
However, with Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Chris Tremlett all returning from injuries, the selectors are keen to ensure there is sufficient back-up should any setbacks occur on the opening weeks of the tour.
Should England’s pacemen all be declared fit for the first Test in Dubai on January 17, Onions is likely to return home.
Miller explained: “We've obviously got some niggles from the seamer point of view, so Graham Onions will go out there in a cover capacity.
“If he's not required then he'll probably come back after the first Test, or even during it.”
Onions has not played for England since January 2010, having seen his career disrupted by a serious back injury.
After returning to full fitness this summer, he has since been called up to the national squad on several occasions, and most recently flew out to India as a replacement for the injured Chris Woakes.
