Azhar earns place in ODI party
Batsman Azhar Ali has been rewarded for his outstanding Test form with a place in Pakistan’s squad for the four one-day internationals with England in the United Arab Emirates.
The 26-year-old right-hander, who hit a career-best 157 in the whitewash-sealing Test win at Dubai, has has been named in a 16-man party. His sole limited-overs cap was in an ODI against Ireland last May.
Awais Zia, part of a squad for the three Twenty20 internationals that follow the ODIs, is the only uncapped member of either party. The 25-year-old left-handed batsman averages 28 at a strike rate of 146 in his 18 domestic T20 games.
Shahid Afridi, Hammad Azam and Shoaib Malik, each named in both squads, will join an ODI party mainly containing the current Test players - aside from Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Talha.
Malik was not originally listed in either party, but has been included at the request of captain Misbah-ul-Haq.
One notable absentee is all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who made little impact in his last Pakistan appearances - three ODIs versus Sri Lanka at Dubai during November.
The first one-day international is in Abu Dhabi on Monday, with the opening T20 at Dubai on February 23.
