Seamer Mark Davies has already enjoyed a fine 2009 as Durham retained the LV= County Championship Division One title

Durham seamer Mark Davies was today added to England’s Test squad as cover for injury doubts James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom.

Anderson has stayed behind in Durban to have another injection on his troublesome right knee.

It had been hoped Anderson’s knee complaint was behind him but the Lancashire seamer has continued to experience soreness from a mystery injury that has not been diagnosed despite scans.

Sidebottom, meanwhile, is struggling with a side complaint, leading England team director Andy Flower to call on back-up for the Test party.

Davies has been a key part of the Durham side that has lifted successive LV= County Championship Division One titles and is in South Africa with the England Performance Programme.

He took six wickets in this week’s victory over Gauteng Strikers, including first-innings figures of 4-56.

The 29-year-old was only denied the chance to complete his five-wicket haul in the first innings when his boots went missing having been left on the outfield.

Davies joins three county team-mates in the England squad, with fellow pacemen Graham Onions and Liam Plunkett taking their place alongside batsman Paul Collingwood.
