Graeme Swann's side problem did not prevent him from taking 6-55 in England's first practice match in East London last week

England have announced that the uncapped Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has been added to the Test squad for the tour of South Africa as cover for Graeme Swann, who has a side injury.

England team director Andy Flower said: “Graeme’s injury is improving and we expect him to be available for the first Test starting on Wednesday.

“But with a further three matches to come after Centurion we have decided that we need a ‘like-for-like’ replacement on hand for Graeme should this be required later in the tour.”

Tredwell, who was also called up to the one-day squad earlier during the tour, played for the England Performance Programme in their practice match against Nashua Titans last week, making 70 in the first innings.
