Chamara Silva has been drafted into Sri Lanka's squad for the first Test against England after Angelo Mathews was ruled out through injury

Sri Lanka have handed a belated recall to batsman Chamara Silva for the two-Test series against England.

Silva is the top-scorer in domestic cricket and advanced his claims for a recall with an exhilirating 163 for the Sri Lanka Development XI against Andrew Strauss’ side this week.

He was left out of an initial 14-man squad, only to be named as a replacement for the injured vice-captain Angelo Mathews.

Mathews flew home from the Asia Cup with a calf problem and has not been deemed fit enough for Monday’s first Test, meaning a call-up for Silva after a four-year absence in five-day cricket.

Dinesh Chandimal and Prasanna Jayawardene are included and will go head to head for the wicketkeeping position.

Rangana Herath and Suraj Randiv head the spin bowling options, while Chanaka Welegedera, Suranga Lakmal and Dhammika Prasad are the specialist seamers.

Sri Lanka squad for first Test against England: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Thilan Samaraweera (vice-captain), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kumar Sangakkara, Dinesh Chandimal, Prasanna Jayawardene, Suranga Lakmal, Dhammika Prasad, Chanaka Welegedara, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Chamara Silva.
