Gayle returns to Windies squad
Chris Gayle is on course to make a surprise return in Friday’s opening one-day match against England after being named in West Indies squad for the first two matches of the series in Guyana.
The Windies captain, 29, was expected to miss the start of the five-match ODI series after sustaining a hamstring injury running the single to bring up his century in the final Test in Trinidad.
But after several days of intensive treatment, the Jamaican has been named in a 13-man squad for the opening two matches at the Providence Stadium.
His return is a major boost to West Indies’ hopes of building on their surprise 1-0 victory in the Test series.
Gayle will reassume the captaincy from Denesh Ramdin, who led West Indies to an emphatic six-wicket victory in yesterday's Twenty20 international in Trinidad.
West Indies will be without seamer Jerome Taylor after he failed to recover from a left calf strain.
Brendan Nash, who scored his first Test century in the fifth Test, is omitted from the party.
West Indies squad: Chris Gayle (captain), Denesh Ramdin (wicketkeeper), Lionel Baker, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Nikita Miller, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith.
