Mike Hussey

Mike Hussey has been recalled to Australia's World Cup squad in place of Doug Bollinger after recovering from an injury of his own

Australia have recalled Mike Hussey to their World Cup squad as a replacement for injured seamer Doug Bollinger.

Veteran middle-order batsman Hussey was named in Australia’s initial 15-man party, but was withdrawn after suffering a hamstring injury and replaced with Callum Ferguson, despite suggesting he would be available before the end of the group stages.

He proved his own prognosis was correct by making his state return for Western Australia and was widely tipped to travel to the sub-continent should Australia require injury cover.

The fact that Bollinger is a bowler means the decision could potentially unbalance the squad but Hussey is a likely bet to go straight back into the starting XI.

Victoria paceman Dirk Nannes will also travel to India as a standby player in case Australia suffer further losses to their bowling attack.

Cricket Australia chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said: “The national selection panel has decided to replace Doug Bollinger with Mike Hussey in the Australian squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup.

“Mike has successfully recovered from major hamstring surgery and is seen as someone who is capable of assisting Australia as we strive to win this tournament.

“His skill, experience, ability against spin and the fact that he provides a left-hand option in the middle order is seen as critical in our World Cup defence now that he has successfully recovered from injury.

“The NSP has also announced that Dirk Nannes will travel to India as a standby fast bowler. Dirk will train with the Australian World Cup squad and be fit, available and acclimatised in the event of an injury to a fast bowler, in particular a new-ball fast bowler, in the final stages of this tournament.

“Dirk has been in excellent form and played a critical role in Victoria’s recent Ryobi Cup victory and will be an excellent replacement bowler in the event of injury to a key opening bowler.”
