Graeme Swann & Andrew Strauss

Graeme Swann and Andrew Strauss are set to take on West Indies in Chennai tomorrow, having recovered from illness to train today

England captain Andrew Strauss and key spinner Graeme Swann have recovered from illness on the eve of the must-win World Cup Group B match against West Indies.

Both reported fit for practice at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai this afternoon, but Ajmal Shahzad has emerged as a new doubt for tomorrow’s crunch fixture after also succumbing to a stomach upset.

Shahzad is the sixth England player to be taken ill at some point on this month-long trip so far. But only Stuart Broad, who subsequently had to return home because of a side strain, has yet missed a match due to illness and Strauss appears confident he and Swann should be able to take on the Windies.

“I’m feeling very well now,” Strauss said. “I was laid low the night before last and yesterday morning.

“Graeme Swann is recovering well and should be practising today. I don’t know if he is quite as buoyant as I am, but we’re still very confident he’ll be fine for tomorrow.

“Ajmal Shahzad has been struck by it as well and he probably will not practise today. We’re not sure at this stage whether that is going to affect his chances of being selected tomorrow.”

Shahzad took three wickets in England’s defeat to Bangladesh in Chittagong on Friday, a result which means they must beat the Windies to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.
