Jayasuriya and Vaas dreams shattered
Two of Sri Lanka’s World Cup-winning veterans, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas, have been left out of their final 15-man squad for the World Cup.
The pair, who were both around when Sri Lanka shocked the world to claim the trophy in 1996, have been overlooked after being given a chance when they named in the provisional 30-strong squad.
At 41 it may well be the end of Jayasuriya’s storied international career, while 36-year-old Vaas could also call time.
Both are already retired from Tests but had set their sights on one more World Cup tilt.
Elsewhere in the squad, Rangana Herath edged Suraj Randiv for the final spinner’s spot.
Kumar Sangakkara’s side are in Group A alongside Australia, Kenya, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
Sri Lanka squad: K Sangakkara (captain & wicketkeeper), M Jayawardene, T Dilshan, U Tharanga, T Samaraweera, C Silva, C Kapugedera, A Mathews, T Perera, N Kulasekara, L Malinga, D Fernando, M Muralitharan, A Mendis, R Herath.
