ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier

ICC World Twenty20 2009

Jeroen Smits & Will Porterfield

Holland captain Jeroen Smits and Ireland skipper William Porterfield shared the trophy after the final was abandoned

Ireland, Holland and Scotland booked a place at the ICC World Twenty20 2009 after occupying the top three places at the ICC World Twenty20 qualifying event which was held in August 2008 at Stormont.

Hosts Ireland were unbeaten in their three games while Holland enjoyed excellent wins over Kenya and Scotland. Unfortunately the much anticipated final between the two top sides fell victim to the dreadful weather meaning the trophy was shared.

On a brighter note, reaching the final ensured both teams will compete at next summer's showpiece event, with Ireland joining India and Bangladesh in Group A and Holland facing England and Pakistan in Group B.

Scotland's path through was less clear-cut. An eight-wicket win over Bermuda was sandwiched by defeats to Ireland and Holland which meant they needed to beat Kenya in a third place play-off to stand a chance of progressing to the World Twenty20.

They duly did, winning by nine wickets, but their place was only confirmed when Zimbabwe pulled out leaving Ryan Watson's side to fill the void. They will line up with New Zealand and South Africa in Group D.

Canada and Bermuda finished fifth and sixth respectively and like Kenya failed to progress.
