Broad salutes captain 'fantastic'

ICC World Twenty20 West Indies 2010

Stuart Broad spoke to ECBtv back at the team hotel

Stuart Broad was thrilled for Paul Collingwood after watching his captain hit the winning runs which crowned England World Twenty20 champions.

Collingwood came to the crease after a slight wobble that saw Kevin Pietersen and Craig Kieswetter fall in quick succession, but the Durham man soon allayed any nerves by pulling Shane Watson for six to take England within touching distance of the trophy.

It seemed appropriate that the stage was left to Collingwood, who punched Watson through mid-on to spark joyous scenes at the Kensington Oval.

"For Colly to hit the winning runs, he has been fantastic as a captain throughout the whole tournament," Broad told ECBtv.

"I'm delighted for him. The moment he hit that six off Shane Watson was the moment everyone relaxed.

"We did really well keeping them to 148 on that wicket. That was probably below par and we were backing ourselves to chase that.

"Kieswetter played fantastically well once again, as he has done, and KP deserves his man of the series because he was magic throughout the whole tournament.

"I had a nervous period when Kiesy got out but we did fantasically well to pull that through.

"We talked about our plans and what we had to do; the way the lads delivered it was fantastic."

England dominated the final - from the moment Kieswetter and Graeme Swann combined to catch Watson, to Collingwood sealing victory, with each moment being cheered by a vocal crowd.

"To play with such conviction was fantastic," said Broad.

"What a moment, to have it in Barbados with the English support we have here.

"I'm sure the support we had at home was fantastic. We'd like to thank the support that came over here but also the support at home because we've all felt it.

"One of the moments that will stick with me for the rest of my life was singing the national anthem. It was a fantastic moment. The crowd were brilliant."

Broad played a supporting role in England's victory but contributed a stunning catch to dismiss the dangerous Cameron White, who threatened to haul Australia towards a large total.

Sprinting back from point, the diving Broad held on to a skied chance just as the figure of Michael Lumb began to loom large.

"We talked about playing with no fear," said Broad. "My only fear was Lumby, who's a lot bigger than me, ploughing through me.

"That was something Colly and Andy (Flower, team director) spoke about before the tournament was playing with no fear. I think it's shone.

"The way Kieswetter has batted, he's just gone out to tried and hit the ball as hard as he can."
