England batsman Kevin Pietersen is to return home from the ICC World Twenty20 in the next 24 hours to be with his pregnant wife for the birth of their first child.

Fresh from a match-winning innings of 53 off 33 balls against South Africa, the ECB announced that the 29-year-old would return from Barbados to be with his pop star wife Jessica Taylor.

He is expected to return to the West Indies should England, as seems likely, qualify for the semi-finals, barring any complications with the birth.

Man-of-the-match Pietersen, who was permitted to join up with the squad late to be with Taylor, said: “It’s my first child so it’s a hell of an exciting time for me. I’ll be dashing across the Atlantic and hopefully dashing back.

“I’m flying back to London in the next 24 hours and hoping everything goes well and according to plan, there’s no complications.

“If we get through to the semi-finals, I’ll come in the day before the semi-finals.”
