Muttiah Muralitharan took 2-25 in Friday's two-wicket defeat to New Zealand, but will miss the rest of the World Twenty20

Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has been ruled out of the ICC World Twenty20 with a groin injury.

The 38-year-old, the highest Test and one-day international wicket-taker in history, suffered the injury in his side’s two-wicket defeat to New Zealand on Friday.

A Sri Lanka Cricket statement read: “Sri Lankan team physio Tommy Simsek speaking to srilankacricket.lk revealed that clinical tests revealed a grade one strain of his right adductor muscle.

“Murali will be advised to rest for two to three weeks, hence a replacement will be decided by SLC with the advice of the National selectors.”
