Muttiah Muralitharan, right, surprisingly returned in yesterday's victory over hosts West Indies, but has now been replaced

Sri Lanka have been permitted to replace the injured Muttiah Muralitharan for the remainder of the ICC World Twenty20, the organisers have confirmed.

Thilan Thushara has been approved as a replacement for the spinner, who is suffering from a groin injury and has been declared unfit by Sri Lanka.

Muralitharan was initially ruled out of the competition on Monday, but made a sufficient short-term recovery to play in yesterday’s Super Eight victory over West Indies.

Sri Lanka meet Australia in their second Super Eight match tomorrow at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
