Erin Osborne

Erin Osborne undermines India's hopes of posting a competitive score at Galle. The off-spinner returned 3-13 for Australia

Australia made light work of India to kick off their defence of the Women’s World Twenty20 with a convincing eight-wicket triumph.

Playing on the same Galle pitch that had been used for England’s defeat of Pakistan earlier in the day, Jodie Fields’ side reduced their opponents to 104 for eight after losing the toss, with Erin Osborne claiming 3-13.

Australia duly cantered home with 16 balls unused, thanks chiefly to 39 from opener Meg Lanning and an unbeaten 36 from Jess Cameron.

India appeared fairly well placed at 63 for two after 10 overs, yet duly lost momentum as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

Off-spinner Osborne led the way, while Julie Hunter chipped in with 2-23 and Jess Jonassen conceded just six in three overs.

In reply, Australia were given a flying start by Alyssa Healy, who raced to 21 before falling to the final ball of the sixth over.

Lanning and Cameron then shared 49 and although the former was bowled by Jhulan Goswami, India were well beaten.
